THE400 Mini
Posted byBill Loguidice Editorial2 Comments
Following the excellent Commodore 64 and Amiga plug and play minis, Plaion and Retro Games LTD have announced a $119.99 THE400 Mini for Atari 8-bit computer fans.
Here are the details:
A half-sized version of the distinctively styled Atari 400, emulating the whole 8-bit Atari range, including the 400/800, XL and XE series, and the 5200 home console. Also included is THECXSTICK – a superb recreation of the classic Atari CX-40 joystick, with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons.
Play one of the included 25 classic Atari games, selected from a simple to use carousel, including all-time greats such as Berzerk, Lee, Millipede, Miner 2049er, M.U.L.E. and Star Raiders II, or play the games you own from USB stick.
Plus save and resume your game at any time, or rewind by up to 30 seconds to help you finish those punishingly difficult classics!
It’s due out March 28, 2024. Those in the US will be able to find it at either Atari.com or Amazon.com.
Here’s the feature list:
- Half-sized version of the Atari 400, emulating the entire 8-bit Atari range from the 400 to the 800XL, as well as the Atari 5200 home console.
- Included is a recreation of the classic Atari CX40 joystick, with an additional seven seamlessly integrated function buttons. This will also be available for separate purchase.
- The ability for players to side-load their own games via a USB stick, with support for cartridge, disk, and cassette ROMs.
- Rewind and save games.
- HD TV output via HDMI, with 50 (PAL) /60 (NTSC) Hz compatibility.
- Five USB ports, which allow for the addition of a modern keyboard, extra joysticks, and more.
- Aesthetics: “The 400 Mini has been lovingly crafted using modern technology, from the hard-to-match colors of the original machine to the authentic textures of the plastic casing and membrane keyboard, no compromise was made relative to the iconic 1970s look and feel of the original Atari 400.”

The Atari 8-bit computers, particularly the 800XL and the 65 / 130 XE were the best of the 8 bit machines, capability wise. None of the other 8 bits could touch them.
A couple of examples that spring to mind (of many); games such as Rescue on Fractalus and Elektra Glide are better on the Atari than other systems. Sorry Spectrum and C64 fans, but it’s true!-

There’s no doubt that the Atari 8-bit series was one of the 8-bit greats, but the C-64 easily wins out in most metrics against other 8-bit machines in my opinion. Regardless, all that matters is that we still get to enjoy them – even the super obscure platforms – to this day.
